System requirements for configuring the Watson Query Remote Agent

System requirements for configuring the Watson Query Remote Agent

Set up specific system requirements to configure and activate remote connectors in Watson Query, including hardware, Java, and network requirements.

System requirements

Hardware requirements
Table 1. Hardware requirements and descriptions
Hardware requirements Description
Operating System support Linux®, Windows or Mac OS operating systems, which can run IBM Java 8 or Oracle Java 8.
Memory

512 Mb in default configuration.

Note: High concurrency or large files access might require a higher memory configuration.
Disk space

500 Mb for Remote Agent software.

Note: Java Runtime Environment has its own system requirements.
Java requirements
IBM® SDK, Java Technology Edition, Version 8 is recommended for running the Watson Query Remote Agent and it is available for download from Java SDK downloads, version 8.0.
Note: Only the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is required for use with the IBM Watson Query Remote Agent and not the full SDK.

The Watson Query Remote Agent also supports Oracle Java SE 8.

Network requirements
The Watson Query Remote Agent needs to be on a network that is configured to allow bidirectional communication with the Watson Query service instance and with any other Watson Query Remote Agents that you choose to deploy. Consider the following network requirements.
  1. The Watson Query service instance running on IBM Cloud or within Red Hat® OpenShift® must be able to establish a network connection to the Remote Agent. If the Watson Query Remote Agent operates within a network that does not allow incoming connections, then consider the following options.
  2. The Watson Query Remote Agent must be able to connect with the Watson Query Service instance. Watson Query instances on IBM Cloud or on Red Hat OpenShift are already configured to allow this incoming connection, but your own network infrastructure might interfere with this communication. You might need to configure HAProxy or appropriate firewall rules to allow this communication.
  3. Configure two network ports for the Watson Query Remote Agent as listed in the following table.
Table 2. Network ports and descriptions
    Network port Description
Data communications port This port defaults to 6414 and you can change it for each Remote Agent you want to deploy.
Management port Management functions port defaults to 7777 and you can change it. If you make a change, then apply it uniformly across all the agents that are deployed in your environment.

After you meet the system requirements to deploy the Remote Agent, proceed to generate the configuration details. See Generating the configuration for the Remote Agent.
