Before you begin
- Enable personal credentials. Navigate to Personal credentials. and enable

- Authorize the Watson
Knowledge Catalog service to access data in your Data Virtualization instance.
- Log in to your IBM® Cloud account where IBM Knowledge Catalog and Data Virtualization instances are provisioned.
- From the menu, select .
- Select Create + to create a new service-to-service authorization.
- Select IBM Knowledge Catalog service as the Source and Data Virtualization service as the Target.
- Select DataAccess role for service access.
- Click Authorize.
- Ensure that at least one data class exists in your account under .
- Ensure that the user who runs profiling runs it from the same IBM Cloud account that the Data Virtualization instance belongs to.
- Added the data source connection from which you want to virtualize to a governed catalog. For more information, see Adding a connection asset to a catalog.
- Added data from your data source connection to a governed catalog. For more information, see Adding a data asset from a connection to a catalog.
- Added the same data source connection that is used in the catalog to Data Virtualization. For more information, see Adding data sources.
- Authored and assigned business terms to data assets that you want to virtualize in a catalog.
About this task
Publishing Data Virtualization objects to the catalog is an entry point to governing your data. One of the key benefits is that you can apply business context or meaning to technical data.
Data Virtualization uses terms in the business glossary in Watson Knowledge Catalog to govern your virtual data. You use business terms to standardize definitions of business concepts so that your data is described in a uniform and easily understood way across your organization. Data Virtualization can automatically use existing term assignments on data assets while it virtualizes that data.
Business terms can describe the contents of the data, the sensitivity of the data, or other aspects of the data.
Procedure
To govern your virtual data with business terms, follow these steps.
Results
On the Virtualized data page, you can publish your virtual object to the catalog. For more information, see Publishing virtual data to the catalog in Data Virtualization.
